NATURE AWAKENS IN THE SPRING Spring on the Mesa is a daily progression as the plants begin to peak their leaves up thru the melting snow. Early wildflowers such as the glacier lily can be the first to show their color. Wildlife becomes more active with the melt and scurry about after so much time in dens and other winter homes. A person can almost watch from the valley below as the greening of the Mesa moves up the sides of this impressive mountain to the top. summer! It's here! There is so much to do and enjoy on the Grand Mesa. The lakes and streams are teaming with trout, bass and other fish. The birds are busy in the tree tops. The trails are calling for hikers. The campgrounds are open for the summer season and ready for your marshmallows over the campfire and the tent pitched nearby. Reservations are not needed. Bring your fishing pole and the binoculars. Catch fish on one of the lakes near your camp or hike into one. You won't find crowds. You can fish from the shore or launch a boat and fish on the lake. There are so many choices you won't know where to begin. The local lodges offer great tips for bait to use and lunch for you too. The tree tops are where to turn for birding. The varieties of birds include grey jay, western tanager and chickadees along with a few more illusive birds. You might even catch a glimpse of a predatory bird eagles, owls, and hawks call Grand Mesa home. Hike the Crag Crest National Recreation Trail. There are two loops to choose from. This is a challenging trail. Be sure to get a brochure from the Visitors Center on top. They will give you tips and give you current trail conditions. See our map page for a quick view of the trail.
