Ancient canyon walls, rich history and thousands of  years of  habitation

PLATEAU VALLEY AREA
MESA - COLLBRAN - VEGA STATE PARK

At the extreme north end of the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway lies a fascinating region that blends the high-altitude Grand Mesa with the ancient river canyon of the Colorado River. Desert sandstone canyons carved by Plateau Creek were inhabited for thousands of years by the desert and mountain archaic tribes who lived within miles of the important Colorado River system.

The settlers' stories, too, are colorful and rich with western flare. Be sure to stop at the pullout at the exit ramp from I-70 to learn more.

Traveling from Plateau Creek Canyon through Collbran and up to Vega State Park Reservoir is a popular trip for our regional residents, where you will drive through some of the most beautiful ranching country in Western Colorado. Vega State Park offers fishing, boating and fully-equipped RV camping.
